Vein Disease Prevention

Our veins and arteries have a critical job of transporting oxygen throughout the body. In time, however, they can become weak or develop certain conditions that are often referred to as vein disease. While some forms of vein disease may be minor, others can be life threatening if not treated promptly. Like other conditions, though, vein disease can be prevented with the right precautions. Learn all about vein disease prevention below:

Avoid the Cigarettes

Smoking can cause harm to your entire body, but especially your veins. A condition called atherosclerosis, where plaque can build up in your vein walls, has been linked to smoking. This condition can become more severe and even lead to a heart attack. Another form of vein disease, called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, has also been linked to smoking and involves blood clots breaking free from the vein and moving towards your heart or lungs. The blood clot may block blood flow and lead to a heart attack or stroke. Put down the cigarettes!

Get Fit

Another way to help prevent vein disease is by remaining active. Obesity is one of the leading causes of vein disease by making patients more likely to develop high blood pressure and diabetes. Both of these serious conditions have been linked to vein disease and can be prevented through a regular regime of exercise. Both conditions can also be linked to family history, so if anyone in your family has developed either one, check with your physician on your possible risks. At least 30 minutes of physical activity is recommended for everyone each day, so if you do not have time, make sure to break it up and get in as much exercise as possible.

Eating Healthy

Similar to exercise, maintaining a healthy diet can help you avoid vein disease. Make sure you eat a regular diet consisting of vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and keep the dairy to a minimum. Your body will appreciate the hard work you put into your diet by helping to prevent vein disease.
