Vein Disease Information

Varicose Veins, Swollen Veins, Visible Veins and Vein Pain

Varicose veins are caused by improperly functioning valves
Vein anatomy of the legs

Many think varicose veins only affect women, are a cause of too much standing or part of old age. Often varicose veins appear toward the lower thigh, around the knee, and in the calf. However, the cause of the problem is usually higher up in the greater saphenous vein.

Moreover, genetics play the largest role in the development of vein disease, as well as gender and age. In certain cases, varicose veins can affect people as young as 20. For instance, women tend to present more varicose vein disease. On the other hand, it affects only 1 in 5 men.

The most common medical origin of varicose veins is known as reflux of the greater saphenous vein. In short, this major circulatory component runs from groin to ankle. Furthermore, it joins many tributaries and connects to the deep vein system through vessels known as perforator veins.

Additionally, veins contain a series of one-way valves that move blood toward the heart.  Failure of this causes blood to flow backwards and to pool and stretch walls of veins in the lower leg. In conclusion, we call this a venous reflux. As a result, this causes the unsightly, symptomatic veins we know as varicose veins.

Furthermore, other factors can influence the severity or speed of vein disease. For example, weight, prolonged standing, and physical trauma. Also, age is a factor because as we grow older, vein walls lose elasticity. Consequently, this causes the valve system in veins to work less effectively. To clarify, patients can change their lifestyles to address vein disease but cannot reverse it. Unfortunately, for the most part, if you were going to develop the problem, you could not have avoided it.

To sum up, vein disease will not resolve on its own or with home remedies. Above all, the only way to heal varicose veins is with vein treatment.

How Are Veins Diagnosed?

We perform the diagnosis on the surface of the skin via ultrasound while you are standing upright. It is completely noninvasive. This is the best way for us to assess the function of veins. Here the transducer follows the veins. It sends and collects sound wave information that assesses the anatomy and flow of blood in the veins. During this test, you will experience very little to no discomfort. Normal results show the blood in veins flows well when we augment or compress the calf, where it stops quickly after we are done with the augmentation. Abnormal results show where veins are performing poorly. You will experience no risks during this procedure.

Vein treatment is quick, minimally invasive, and most health insurances provide coverage. Dr. Wright can perform diagnostics and advise you of your options so that you may understand and treat the condition.
