The Top Risk Factors for Developing Vein Disease

When it comes to varicose veins and other vein disease, there are a variety of risk factors that can increase your chances of developing these issues. Vein disease can be influenced by our genetics or added pressure in the blood vessels. Take a look at the top risk factors that can contribute to the development of vein disease:

Genetics

As mentioned, our genes play a huge factor into the development of vein disease. Predisposition to develop varicose veins can be passed down through generations. While the gene may be present, it is particular environmental factors that will activate it; female hormones like estrogen and progesterone are such factors. Studies find that close to half of all varicose vein patients have some kind of family history with the disease. You can be at a risk factor of almost 90% if both your parents had varicose veins.

Gender

Another important factor of vein disease is gender. Unfortunately, more women are impacted by varicose veins than men. Approximately 55% of all varicose vein patients are women. If you do have a family history of vein disease, it will be more common for the daughter to inherit it.

Age

Age plays a huge role in the development of vein disease. Varicose veins and other vein disease are much more common when you get older. Almost 41% of women will develop varicose veins when they reach the age of 50. Age is also a factor for men as well, as around 42% of men in their 60s will develop vein disease.

Prolonged Periods of Sitting

If you work at a job where you sit for long periods of the day, you may be exposing yourself to greater risk for vein disease. Our blood vessels will not be functioning properly and can cause the blood to pool in your legs. This can cause long-term danger from vein disease.

Pregnancy and Obesity

While pregnancy and obesity are not the same, they can both place pressure on your veins. The development of vein disease only increases when our veins are under constant pressure, causing them to become faulty.
