Deep Vein Thrombosis: Prevention and Treatment Options

We can develop a variety of symptoms from vein disease over our lifetime. Deep vein thrombosis is perhaps one of the deadliest symptoms of vein disease if left untreated. What may start as a simple blood clot can develop into more significant concerns such as a pulmonary embolism. Identifying the causes of deep vein thrombosis and understanding on how to prevent it can be critical to your vein health.

Causes

To understand how you can prevent deep vein thrombosis from occurring, it is important to know how it is caused. Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot that is often found deep in your lower leg or thighs. Sometimes the condition may be primarily due to varicose veins symptoms. Either way, your blood valves are not working as they should. Deep vein thrombosis can be caused by sitting for prolonged periods of time. When sitting for extended periods you are not contracting the muscles in your legs that promote blood flow. Long airline flights and car rides can increase your risk so wearing compression socks and getting up frequently during trips is important. Deep vein thrombosis can also be inherited; your risk is much higher if a direct family member has experienced it before. Dramatic changes to your body, such as pregnancy can accelerate the development of deep vein thrombosis, along with injuries.

Prevention

It is important for those who are prone to deep vein thrombosis to remain active even during their later years. By working the muscles in your legs, you are helping the veins pump the blood back to your heart. This is especially important for those with a family history of deep vein thrombosis. Follow a steady diet and exercise regime to help alleviate any pressure on your veins and arteries. Not only does obesity increase the pressure on your veins but so does smoking. Surgery and acute illness are risk factors for deep vein thrombosis, so talk with your doctor about steps to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis with surgery or acute illness.

Treatment Options

Treatment options for deep vein thrombosis vary from simple over the counter remedies to surgical solutions. Minor developments may only require compression stockings that will help the blood flow in your legs. More severe developments may require endovenous laser treatment or radiofrequency ablation to help reduce or eliminate the blood clot. If deep vein thrombosis is left untreated, you can be susceptible to a pulmonary embolism that can be deadly.
