All About Large Volume Fat Liposuction

If you are considering liposuction, you may have come across a procedure called large volume liposuction. Here is a look at this procedure to help you decide if it is the best one for you.

What is Large Volume Liposuction?

The definition of large volume liposuction can vary — in fact, there is no strict definition from professional sources. The most common definition is a procedure that will remove between four to five total liters (approximately 10 pounds) of fat during a single liposuction session.

The Procedure

Over the past few years, liposuction techniques have changed and evolved. Currently, the procedure is far simpler and less painful. Liposuction methods include:

  • Tumescent
  • Power Assisted
  • Ultrasonic
  • Laser
  • Super Wet/Water Assisted

Large volume liposuction procedures usually entail several body areas rather than a single treatment area. Additionally, due to the more invasive nature of large volume procedures, general anesthetic and a hospital stay are usually required.

Recovery after a large volume liposuction procedure is generally much longer. It can take up to three months for the bruising to disappear. You will need to reduce your activity level and you may not be able to return to work for a week or longer. You will also need to wear compression garments for several weeks after the procedure to help fluid drainage and proper healing.

Other Risks and Possible Complications

While the risks are similar to regular liposuction procedure, the probability that they occur is higher with large volume liposuction. The risks/complications include:

  • Dermal/skin damage, including sagging, dimpling, lumps and bumps
  • Anesthesia risks
  • Fluid imbalance, including possibility of dehydration and electrolyte imbalances
  • Hematoma/bruising
  • Blood Clots
  • Allergic reactions to anesthesia or medication
  • Infection

Additional procedures may be needed to get the expected results. As with any lipo procedure, the treatment areas can regain the fat if a proper diet and exercise routine is not followed post-procedure.
