Healthy Diet, Healthy Veins – How Your Diet Can Affect Your Vein Health

Your body’s vascular system is a very important component of your overall health, as it carries oxygen and nutrient-filled blood throughout your body and back to your heart. Often, many people develop vein conditions and issues. These frequently happen as we age, and often the earliest symptoms do not seem serious; however, left untreated they can turn into serious—sometimes life-threatening—medical conditions.

In many cases, vein disease is a genetic condition; anyone with a family history of vein disease is more likely to develop issues. Also, age can play a factor, as statistics show that one-third of Americans over 45 years of age have some sort of vein condition such as varicose veins.

Diet Can Help Fight Vein Disease

There are certain foods and nutrients that can help keep the veins, arteries, and associated valves strong and elastic to maintain good vein health. With a little knowledge about the foods that can keep your veins healthy, you may be able to keep those veins in top condition. Take a look at some of the healthy diet foods that can help.

Colorful Foods

Foods that are rich in bioflavonoids (the vitamin that gives vibrant color to vegetables and fruits) can reduce varicose veins because they are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Fresh vegetables and fruits are an overall great way to get the nutrients necessary for vein health. These include:

• Spinach
• Broccoli
• Citrus fruits
• Strawberries
• Tropical fruits

When possible, eat fruits and vegetables in a raw form. There is a difference in nutrient value between fresh produce and those that have been canned, cooked, and/or processed.

Add That All-Important Fiber

Fiber is essential for any healthy diet. Because fiber can help maintain a healthy weight, this can reduce the risk for varicose veins. Grains that are fiber rich are a great option, as well as replacing sugary snacks with fresh fruit.

Water, Water, and More Water

When you are well hydrated, you can help relieve varicose vein symptoms. Drinking enough water is very important to your diet, especially if you eat a lot of fiber. Water can help flush out your system and maintain your body’s overall balance.

Reduce the Sodium

Sodium can cause the body to retain fluids, which in turn can cause damage to the veins. When you increase your water intake and reduce your sodium levels, your tissues (and veins) can become more balanced.
