At St. Louis Laser Lipo and Vein, we are often asked about the benefits of wearing compression stockings and garments. Of course, many of our vein patients are advised to wear compression stockings for the relief of varicose veins, especially after vein removal procedures. However, there are many benefits of compression garments, especially for those who may spend long periods of time standing or sitting. These garments can benefit those who may be suffering from:

  • Tired, achy, heavy feeling legs
  • Leg swelling
  • Venous insufficiency
  • Post-thrombotic syndrome
  • Active or healed venous ulcer
  • Lymphedema

How Does Compression Therapy Work?

Compression therapy is the term describing the use of compression stockings or bandages, usually to manage venous disease or lymphedema, in addition to those with fatigue, or heaviness in their legs. One of the most important effects is that this compression action increases pressure to the tissues under the skin to reduce and prevent swelling. It also helps move any excess fluid build up by moving the fluid back into the capillaries. It also helps prevent fluids from leaking out of these tiny vessels.

Additional Benefits

In addition to compression stockings used to alleviate medical conditions, these garments are now seeing a rise in popularity among athletes, especially runners. While the research is still out about the actual effectiveness of wearing these garments, many researchers do say that the mental effect does boost overall performance.

Many athletes depending upon their sport can be seen wearing calf, elbow, and arm sleeves, along with full shirts and pants. The benefits of these athletic-quality compression garments include:

  • Reduced Swelling: This can be important to runners or other athletes spending lots of time on their feet.
  • Protection: These garments can protect your legs and arms from abrasions or other similar injuries. They will also prevent dirt build up.
  • Warmth: They do provide a certain amount of warmth for those days you may not want to wear those long pants or sweats.

Dr. Wright of the Laser Lipo and Vein Center says, “Compression garments can be very beneficial. You just need to understand how to properly choose and wear them.” Please call us at the Laser Lipo and Vein Center if you have any questions about compression garments. We are happy to answer your questions!
